Where tranquillity and luxury come together. Found in the southeast of France, near both the Italian and Swiss borders, Megève came to fame as a popular ski destination for the rich and famous in the 1920s, and it continues to delight more than 100 years on. It’s a true mecca for fine dining and chic boutique shopping. Although Courchevel is known as one of the most luxurious ski resorts in France, those in the know still prefer to stay in Megève for a more private experience.
It doesn’t get better than Megève. Surrounded by immaculate snow-covered peaks, Megève is made up of two exceptional ski areas: Portes du Mont Blanc & Évasion Mont-Blanc. The domain Portes du Mont Blanc connects the villages of Combloux, Le Jaillet and La Giettaz and for the more avid skiers, you can access the Évasion Mont-Blanc, which brings together the municipalities of Saint-Gervais-Les-Bains, Les Contamines-Montjoie and Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce. The closest ski slopes to the resort centre are on Rochebrune, linked by a gondola from the heart of the village or by a separate cable car from the outskirts.
Thanks to the uncrowded slopes, Megève is a great choice for beginners and intermediates (71% of the ski area rated as being suitable for intermediates). And for those seeking adrenaline, experience the thrill of the Princesse run, or the infamous Emile Allais black piste.
With gentle and wide slopes and safe beginner areas, Megève is ideal for those looking to learn to ski. The designated beginner areas have games, obstacles and adapted lifts, perfect for those first initial days. Within the Megève ski area, beginners have access to 19 green pistes, but the whole Mont Blanc area has 43 green beginner runs on offer - and plenty of restaurants in the mountains to rest when a break is needed too. And for those ready to progress, there are 63 blue runs to discover.
Megève has also designed fun areas for skiing with kids. Think tunnels and arches, small bumps and race areas, as well as pistes that weave in and out of the trees. These are found in the village of the Lutins in Rochebrune, the play area l’Ours as well as Prés and Jaillet.
